Restore & Revitalize Pier Street Beach Access
The Pier Street Beach Project is a group of community members who aim to rejuvenate the deteriorating Pier Street Beach. The project includes rebuilding the beach's access points, viewing platforms, and stairs, ensuring accessibility.
The History
Pier Street Beach has served as a destination for swimming, strolling along the shore, watching sunsets, and gathering with family.
It also provides public beach access for those wishing to walk and explore the beach.
We seek to preserve, restore, and revitalize the beach access.
The Problem
Shrinking shoreline due to rising lake levels, affecting aesthetics and use.
Infrastructure damage, with safety risks like exposed rebar.
Environmental degradation, compromising bluff stability and biodiversity.
Access issues, including drain hazards at the lookout, impact usability and safety.
The Solution
A new beach outlook and viewing platforms and ensure continuous access to Lake Michigan's shoreline, regardless of beach presence.
Reconstruct the beach stairs to be safer, sturdier, and wider, allowing people to ascend and descend simultaneously for improved access.
Stabilize the bluff by planting grasses, trees, and shrubs with deep root systems.
Remove hazards like cement, rebar, and rubble.
Throughout its history, the beach has come and gone at Pier Street. The new viewing structures create access to the shoreline of Lake Michigan at Pier Street regardless of the presence of a beach and will ensure that the community has a destination at the lakefront, a place to go. The Pier Street Beach Project is a community group working with Chikaming Township and the township’s parks administrator.
